This biographical sketch introduces a significant Southern portrait photographer of the 19th century, Esley Hunt. In 1817, Esley Hunt was born in the rural mountainous area that later became Johnson City, TN. (His childhood home, the Henson Hunt House, is on the Historical Register there and still serves as a private residence.) In the late 1840’s, Esley and his first wife, Emily Hornbarger Hunt, moved 220 miles to Chapel Hill, NC, where Esley would eventually become that town’s first studio photographer. He owned a house in Chapel Hill and 100 acres in Mebanesville (now Mebane). Emily died of illness in 1852, leaving Esley with three young children to supervise. The following year, Esley married Louisa Lutterloh of nearby Chatham County. By 1859, Esley had acquired a second portrait studio in Raleigh. He bought a home there for his family and would acquire 60 acres of land in the capitol city. In early advertisements, Esley stated his commitment to create art – unusual in an era when many considered photography to be more of a technician’s itinerant occupation than an artist’s profession. By the late 1850’s, he and his artistic partner, painter Joshua P. Andrews of New York, were receiving top awards at the North Carolina State Fairs. With artistic recognition, they received premium fees. North Carolina joined the Confederacy in 1861. Raleigh became a gateway for soldiers and Esley continued to operate its primary portrait studio. Civil War portraits by Mr. Hunt and Mr. Andrews remain highly valued by collectors, and are invaluable to historians, genealogists, descendants and those interested in Civil War history and portraiture. Esley Hunt is often considered to have been North Carolina’s best Civil War portrait photographer, and he was among the best in the South. (First published in 2018, this was his first published biography.)
